Treatment for CHILBLAINS (Pernio)
Chilblain is one of the mildest forms of cold injury. It is most common in children, especially girls, but can affect people at any age. Chilblain is most often seen in cold, damp climates, such as the British Isles. The hands and feet are usually involved, but the face, ears and occasionally the calves or buttocks can be affected. The skin becomes bright red or bluish and swollen. There is a burning or itching sensation, especially with re-warming. Blisters and sores may occur.
Topical preparations for itching can be used. Breaks in the skin should be protected with ointments and light dressings, such as those used for cuts or minor burns. Secondary infection can occur. Further exposure to cold, wet conditions should be avoided.
Prevention Tips for Chilblains
Prevention depends on the use of adequate clothing and the avoidance of exposure to cold. Gloves and boots should fit properly and keep extremities dry.
